Am Markt 14, Osterwieck

A pearl radiates its lustrous beauty in an array of colors -- no wonder Osterwieck is often referred to as the pearl of Saxony-Anhalt.

The picturesque town of Osterwieck adorns its half-timbered houses with colorful decorative elements, such as fan rosettes

A fan rosette was a wood carving popular during the 15th century. It has sections that resemble a fan.

For instance, the wall panels of the three-story corner house at Am Markt 14 have overlapping red, yellow, and green fan rosettes. Small cross-shaped motifs surround the edges of the fan rosettes. From a distance, these motifs appeared to be strings of pearls.

Aside from the fan rosettes, ship's throats and house inscriptions decorate the wall panel.

A house inscription includes the name of the builder and the year the house or building was built. According to the inscription here, the house was built by Ulrich Heiligendorf for Heinrich Winckel.
