Monschau nestles in the hills of Eifel, where the Rur River runs through it.

The cobblestone streets of Monschau are decked with half-timbered structures with horizontal weatherboard walls and locally quarried slates.

To illustrate, Burgau 1, a charming half-timbered house situated on the bank of a bridge, has a white weatherboard wall. The upper floor and the roof are covered with slates.

The house has a gambrel roof with gable dormers. A gambrel roof is a symmetrical two-sided roof wherein each side has two slopes. One slope is steep, and the other one is shallow. The gable end of a gambrel roof has an A shape.

One side of the house's gable end is painted white and supported by wooden frames. The other side of the gable end has slates.
